MY BLOG SECTION WILL CONTAIN REFLECTIONS ABOUT DIFFERENT UNITS WE DID IN CLASS.
Editing is often the most fun part of the news story for me to do. We learned so much about using imovie on our ipad, which is such an amazing tool. Some of the most important things I remembered from the editing unit was to shoot lots of b-roll, so you have lots to work with later on. Also, getting good sound is key to a good flowing video. Lastly, always set your transitions to go right from one clip into another.

Interviewing is 100 percent the most important part of a news package. The hardest part for me is probably holing the ipad, but I got through it. I learned the best way to get good answers is to ask open ended questions that start with things such as "tell me about..." Also, you have to end with, "is there anything else you would like to add."
This short section helped me understand the importance of NAT sound in a news package. When we watched the video with Nat sound, and then the same video without, it made a huge DIFFERENCE. The sound you collect in the natural element of where you are shooting is the difference between a good and bad video.
I think the most important thing that I learned in the shooting section was Walldo. Before this section, i already knew what B-roll was and how to shoot wide, medium, and tight shots. But, by learning Walldo, it is a way that will improve my news packages in the future by using more interesting camera shots and angles. Also, the rule of thirds will rally help me with interviews. It makes the interviewee look less awkward as they are no longer staring at the camera.
Throughout reading those article and watching those videos, it amazed me how much more your IPad and/or iPhone can be than what it already is. I learned that there are so many mojo's out in this world. It's so cool that they participate in news by being citizen journalist, without a pay. Better yet, it's awesome how back in the election they were talking about no video news was aloud. Yet, because of everyone's mobile technology, people captured video of it anyways and reported it to other countries and put the information on websites. One of the most important thing I think I've learned in this class so far is the importance of sharing the news you have collected. That's just what happened there. On another note, the article in which the professor on journalism travels to Africa was great. It shows that anybody can be a journalist with super expensive technology and years of experience. There are even free apps for your iPod with great tech you can download to make your videos, movies, and interviews so much better!!
All in all, what I learned from the last 8 sections is that anyone can be a journalist. You don't have to be payed to do it or even have special equipment. Therefore, anyone can be a mojo. Visual storytelling is very important in a news package. In my opinion, the video and pictures in a news feature need to be visually appealing. Also, I believe that there should be a lot more video with movement and action then just stand still pictures. Stand still pictures can be very effective, but b-roll can be one of the most important parts of a news story. Also, clear, focused pictures help with the visual appearance of the story. Another important part of a story isn't just the look, it's the sound. The nat (natural) sound makes the video better as well. Lastly, compelling sound bites makes everything better. The last 2 thing I'm going to say about the appearance of visual storytelling are 2 of the most important elements. They are emotion and camera angles. If the camera angles are off then everything looks sloppy. And finally, without emotion, the audience will not care about your story.
Overall, all of the things I said above contribute to the overall success of creating a visual story. If you even miss one element, it makes you look like you don't know what you are doing. |
